No — a doctor's note on its own doesn't remove a Walmart attendance point.

On the attendance side, the thing that protects a day is PPTO, entered within 7 days of the absence. A note's job is different. It's the supporting documentation for an approved leave or accommodation through Sedgwick, and once that leave is approved, the days it covers aren't counted as points.

What actually removes a point? PPTO, used within 7 days

PPTO is the tool built to keep an absence from becoming a point. Used in enough quantity to satisfy the Attendance Policy, it "protects... from getting attendance occurrences/points," per Walmart's own PPTO FAQ. You have seven days from the date of the absence to enter it.

Two things are worth knowing. PPTO doesn't require any supporting documentation, so you don't need a note to use it. And it can't protect a No Call/No Show — the FAQ names that exception directly.

So if you have the balance and you're inside the seven days, PPTO is the fastest way to protect the day. The limit is how much PPTO you have. If your balance is low or the window has already passed, PPTO alone won't cover it, and that's where the leave side comes in.

When a note does matter: leaves, FMLA, and accommodations

A note matters as evidence for an approved leave or accommodation. Once Walmart approves a leave through Sedgwick, the absences that leave covers are protected — they're not counted as attendance points. That approval is the mechanism, and the provider paperwork is what supports it.

FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) is one route. If you qualify, it protects your job during leave for your own serious health condition or to care for a spouse, child, parent, or another qualifying family member. Eligibility runs on three tests: 12 months employed, 1,250 hours worked in the past 12 months, and a worksite with 50 or more employees within 75 miles — most Walmart stores clear that last one.

The leave doesn't have to be one long block. Intermittent FMLA covers conditions that flare, where some shifts you work and some you can't, and each covered absence is protected instead of pointed. If you're not FMLA-eligible yet, a medical leave or an accommodation through Sedgwick doesn't require FMLA eligibility — the paperwork is the same kind of provider-completed certification.

Keep calling in each absence the usual way. For intermittent leave, report each absence to Sedgwick promptly; Walmart's leave guide says within two calendar days, or the absence may not be approved.

Note vs. certification: what Sedgwick actually needs

A plain sick note and a leave certification are not the same document. A sick note says you were seen and should rest. A certification answers the specific questions Sedgwick needs to approve and administer the leave — dates, frequency, duration, and how the condition affects your work.

Using the certification your leave administrator asks for is often the clearest way to provide every item requested and cut down on follow-up. When Sedgwick calls documentation "insufficient," it usually means an item was missing, vague, or a generic paper came in instead of what was requested — not that you picked the wrong form. The decision still belongs to Walmart, and what needs fixing depends on the notice, so read it closely.

"But I went to the ER and got a note" — will I still get a point?

Maybe. An ER visit and a note prove you were genuinely sick, but proof of illness and point protection are two different things under the policy. If you didn't cover the day with PPTO within seven days, the absence can still land as a point even with the note in hand.

Where that ER visit helps is the leave side. A serious health issue, yours or a family member's, is the kind of situation a leave or intermittent FMLA is meant to cover. The note and records from that visit can support the certification Sedgwick reviews.

Check your own attendance record to see whether the day posted as a point, and check your PPTO balance while you're there. Your record, not a number from a forum, is what tells you where you stand and how close any coaching or termination step is under your store's policy.

What to do when PPTO doesn't cover the absence

Start with your own record. Open your attendance history and your PPTO balance so you know which days posted as points and whether you can still cover them inside the seven-day window. That tells you what PPTO can handle and what needs a leave.

If your absence may qualify for medical leave or an accommodation, start a Sedgwick case as soon as possible. A leave isn't automatic — Sedgwick reviews it, and the days are protected only once it's approved. Sedgwick replies with what it needs and a deadline; go by that deadline, not by what a forum thread remembers.

When Sedgwick tells you it needs a provider-completed certification, that's the part Certicare handles.
