Amazon maternity leave: how it works

Plain answers about Amazon's pregnancy and parental leave, from Certicare, where a state-licensed provider completes the provider's part of your leave forms after a real evaluation. Your exact dates are in your own DLS message, and this page shows you where the rest is posted.

Does Amazon offer maternity leave?

Amazon's posted U.S. benefits list two paid benefits for a growing family: Paid Pregnancy Leave and Paid Parental Leave. They are separate benefits, each with its own rules.

  • Paid Pregnancy Leave
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Leave Share
  • Ramp Back

The same page lists two more. Leave Share lets an employee give part of paid parental leave to a spouse or partner whose employer offers none. Ramp Back is flexible, partial hours for birth parents who are returning to work.

Amazon updates that page by benefit year, so read the current version at amazon.jobs under "U.S. Benefits (Excluding Hawaii)". It lists the benefits. It does not tell you how to apply, and that part is in section 5 below.

Who is eligible for Amazon maternity leave?

Amazon ties these family-building leaves to your employment class and your schedule. That is why two people on the same shift can be told different things.

We don't print the cutoffs on this page. Amazon relabels that page by benefit year, and a number copied from a website can be out of date. The current rules are on Amazon's benefits page and in A to Z.

For your own case, the letter or message DLS sent is the one that counts. Federal FMLA has its own tests, and those are a separate question. They are in section 6.

How long is Amazon maternity leave, and how much does it pay?

Length and pay are the figures Amazon changes, so this page doesn't print them. They are written down for you in three places, and each one is a screen or a letter you can open tonight.

Where your figures live

Amazon's U.S. benefits page

Open amazon.jobs and find "U.S. Benefits (Excluding Hawaii)". Read the Paid Pregnancy Leave and Paid Parental Leave entries, and the note about employment class.

A to Z (MyHR)

Go to MyHR → My Requests → Open cases → your leave case. Read the case number and what DLS lists inside it.

The letter or message from DLS

Yours

This one is about your case; Amazon says its plan documents govern over its web pages. Read the dates it states and any deadline it names.

Amazon says its leave for birthing parents covers time before the birth as well as after, so check when your leave can start. If two screens disagree, go by the DLS message and ask DLS about the difference.

Pregnancy leave or parental leave: which part is which?

In federal terms, leave for the pregnancy and recovery is leave for your own serious health condition; bonding leave is for the birth itself. Amazon lists its two paid benefits separately; which days each one covers is in your case. Leave Share belongs to parental leave.

Ramp Back is the third piece for birth parents: flexible, partial hours when you come back to work.

Which benefits apply to you, and when each one starts, shows up in your case. You don't have to sort it out before you open one. Open the case and read what DLS lists.

How do you apply for maternity leave at Amazon?

You apply through a leave case, and the steps below follow it in order. Any date you need is in your DLS message.

  1. 1

Open your leave case in A to Z.

If you have not opened a case yet, start a leave of absence request in A to Z (MyHR); DLS opens the case. To find it later, go to MyHR → My Requests → Open cases → your leave case. Your case number is there, and on formal DLS emails, letters and provider forms.

  2. 2

    Read what DLS lists.

DLS lists the forms it needs inside your case. Which forms a pregnancy leave gets is not posted publicly, so go by the list in your case, not by a number from somewhere else.

  3. 3

Have a licensed provider complete the provider's part.

That is whichever form DLS lists. Certicare does this step, and section 8 shows how.

  4. 4

    Send it in.

Upload the completed form to your case, or ask us to send it to DLS.

  5. 5

Read every DLS message for the deadline.

The deadline is in your DLS message. Go by that date.

DLS decides the leave. HR and timekeeping own UPT, points and schedules, and an approved leave should flow through to attendance but may not do so automatically or immediately. After a decision, look at your attendance record too.

Tell us which form DLS listed in your case, and the provider's part starts there.

Does FMLA apply to maternity leave at Amazon?

FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) is a federal law, not an Amazon program. Where FMLA applies, both parents are entitled to FMLA leave for the birth of their child. A spouse is entitled to it if needed to care for a pregnant spouse who is incapacitated, during her prenatal care, or after the birth if she has a serious health condition.

The expectant mother is entitled to FMLA leave for incapacity due to pregnancy, for prenatal care, or for her own serious health condition following the birth. The entitlement for the birth itself expires at the end of the 12-month period beginning on the date of the birth.

Eligibility has three tests: a worksite where your employer has 50 or more employees within 75 miles, 12 months of employment, and 1,250 hours of service in the preceding 12 months. That is a little over 24 hours actually worked per week, and PTO and leave time generally don't count toward it.

  • 50 within 75 miles
  • 12 months
  • 1,250 hours

Passing the tests is necessary, not sufficient. FMLA can run at the same time as Amazon's own leave; the two are not either/or. Your case shows how DLS is running them.

Leave to bond with the baby does not need a medical certification; an employer may ask only for proof of the family relationship. The medical form is for the pregnancy and recovery itself.

Certicare is not affiliated with Amazon. Amazon makes the final decision on leave and accommodation requests. This page is general information about the leave process, not legal advice.

What if you need changes at work before the leave?

Pregnancy can change what your body can do on a shift long before the leave starts. Pregnancy-related restrictions fall under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, in effect since 2023.

Accommodations have their own pages. To ask for a change at Amazon, read the accommodation request guide. For restrictions and light duty, read that page. For the law itself, read our pregnancy accommodations guide.

Who completes the provider's part of your Amazon leave?

If the provider already treating your pregnancy will complete the form, that is the simplest route. Certicare is for when that is not available, or not in time. It is completed and signed by a state-licensed provider, after a real evaluation, on whichever form DLS lists in your case.

You answer a short online intake, usually no appointment to book. A provider may follow up for more detail before deciding. An evaluation does not guarantee a signature: the provider signs only what the evaluation supports.

Upload the completed form to your case yourself, or we can also send it directly to DLS if you ask us to.
